How does no fault insurance work on Long Island?

No-fault insurance on Long Island, as in many other states, is a type of auto insurance that covers medical expenses and lost wages for drivers and passengers involved in a car accident, regardless of who was at fault for the accident. This means that regardless of who caused the accident, each party’s insurance company will pay for their own medical expenses and lost wages, up to a certain limit. However, no-fault insurance does not cover property damage.

In New York State, which includes Long Island, the no-fault insurance law requires all drivers to carry a minimum of $50,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. This PIP coverage provides benefits for medical expenses, lost wages, and other related expenses resulting from injuries sustained in a car accident, regardless of who caused the accident.

The $50,000 limit is the minimum required by law, but drivers can choose to purchase additional PIP coverage if they want more protection. It’s important to note that no-fault insurance only covers economic losses resulting from injuries sustained in a car accident, such as medical bills and lost wages. It does not cover non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering, unless the injury meets certain criteria.

Additionally, in order to be eligible for no-fault benefits in New York State, a person must seek medical attention within 30 days of the accident. Failure to do so could result in the denial of benefits. Overall, no-fault insurance is designed to provide a quicker and more efficient way for injured parties to receive compensation for their medical expenses and lost wages, without having to go through the process of determining fault or liability for the accident.
