Charities You Can Donate To During the Covid-19/Coronavirus Pandemic

I think it’s safe to say that no one was expecting 2020 to go the way it has been going. As we all know, millions of families around the world are quarantining themselves to try to slow the spread of the ever growing coronavirus. Life for many has pretty much come to a halt, and the effects of this pandemic has greatly affected the lives of many. New York especially is one of the most affected areas in the entire world. All non-essential businesses are required to work remotely if possible and even essential businesses are reducing their on-site staff where they can. The result being many losing their jobs. In addition, many are also getting sick with the disease, with a portion of those infected being in critical condition.

For those of us who are fortunate enough to not be as affected, we still may feel like there’s nothing we can do to help, since we are all doing our part by staying home. It is important to emphasize that every single person who is actively listening to the necessary precautions to prevent the spread are already helping the cause. However, there are many organizations who are devoted to helping out those who are in need due to the pandemic. Here are some causes you can contribute to while still staying at home.

Meals on Wheels America

Meals on Wheels America is an organization that delivers food to the elderly. With the Covid-19 pandemic, the elderly are at the highest risk of death if exposed to the virus. As a result, many family members are being especially careful with their elderly relatives so as not to potentially expose them to the virus. Others also don’t have family to take care of them and every time they leave their house to go get groceries, they could potentially be risking their lives. Organizations like Meals on Wheels are doing all they can to deliver nutritious meals to elderly ones in need. They are currently working to provide over 200,000 emergency meals in response to the outbreak. Click here if you would like to donate to this cause

Doctors Without Borders

As you may or may not know, Covid-19 is affecting virtually every country in the world, with some more infected than others. Some countries do not have the money or manpower to adequately treat those who are infected with the virus. While there is no cure for the virus currently, providing proper medical treatment to prevent the virus from blocking a person’s airways is crucial to their potential survival. Doctors Without Borders is sending aid to the countries hit hardest by Covid-19 and strengthening the infection controls in its already established programs, as well as maintaining existing help in the 70-plus countries it regularly assists. The Front Steps Project

What started as a solo contribution to the local community has turned into a phenomenon across the country for photographers wanting to do their part to help out. Boston photographer Cara Soulia and her friend Kristen Collins, had an idea to highlight the faces of their community during a time when we might not see them in passing at the grocery store, coffee shop, on the train or at the gym.  Within 24 hours, over 100 local residents asked to participate. In just shy of two weeks, they were able to raise $25000 to donate to local non-profit organizations trying to aid others during the pandemic. Now, photographers around the country are participating and over $75000 has been raised by people in the community getting their picture taken (10 to 15ft away) on their front porch and donating to the cause. World Health Organization

This is the organization that is at war with this virus. The world health organization takes the lead in trying to pursue the steps needed to stop the pandemic. The WHO  is coordinating efforts across the world to respond to existing cases and prevent the novel coronavirus from spreading. According to their website, your donations will contribute to one of the following.

  • Putting in place activities to Track and understand the spread of the virus;
  • Ensuring patients get the care they need
  • Buying and ship essential supplies such as masks, gloves and protective wear for frontline workers
  • Producing evidence based guidelines and advice, and make sure health workers and responders get the information and training to detect and treat affected patients;
  • Producing guidance for the general public and for particular groups on measures to take to prevent the spread and prevent themselves and others
  • Accelerating efforts to develop vaccines, tests and treatments.

This is probably the most direct organization you can donate to the fight against the virus itself. For more information, click here.

Hopefully sooner rather than later, this nightmare will be over and we can go outside and hug our friends and family members again. In the meantime, do your part, stay home and stay safe.
