With another decade approaching, we are soon saying goodbye to 2019. This year has been an exciting year for us at Palermo Law, and we wanted to share with you some of the highlights we had this year.

Record Breaking Settlements

It is our passion to maximize financial compensation for our clients. Our staff works very hard to make sure clients are treated fairly. We fight for them so they get the money they deserve after facing serious injury, and 2019 was no exception. In fact, this year has been a record breaking year for Palermo Law. This is the best grossing year to date in settling cases for our clients.

Most notably, was a case involving a woman who faced serious injury after a motor vehicle accident. She faced very serious injuries as a result of the accident, with neck injuries and herniated discs. The severity of the injuries required multiple surgeries. Our firm was able to receive a $950,000 settlement from the opposing parties insurance company to compensate for her injuries.

New Office in Eastern Suffolk County

Palermo Law has had five office locations throughout Long Island (Hauppauge, Garden City, Babylon, Patchogue and Huntington). We expand our offices so that it is easier for clients to consult with us, so they can focus on recovering from their injuries. With Patchogue previously being our easternmost office, we felt we could make ourselves more available to the east end of Suffolk County. As a result, in April of 2019, Palermo Law has opened a new office in Riverhead, New York.

New Staff

To further help the process of recovery and compensation for our clients, we have expanded our staff at the firm. We have a friendly new assistant Shayna and a new associate, Michael Giasullo. Michael (also known as MJ) joined Palermo Law as an associate in September of 2019. Prior to joining Palermo Law, Michael served as a Judicial Law Clerk to the then newly appointed Hon John P. McDonald, J.S.C. in the Superior Court, Family Part, Somerset County New Jersey. Michael is admitted to practice in both New York and New Jersey and is an active member of the New York Bar Association and American Bar Association. We are excited to have him on our team to help fight on behalf of our clients.

Client Feedback Milestone

Palermo Law treats every case with two goals in mind, maximizing results and satisfying our clients. At Palermo Law, we recognize that every one of our clients is an individual with their own story and unique needs. We are with them every step of the way on the road to recovery. We take the time to learn about their lives, and the impact their injuries have had on them. When a client expresses appreciation in return by way of online feedback, we are extremely grateful. This year, we are happy to report that our attorneys have earned in total over 200 five-star reviews from our clients.

Even though we had an exciting year in 2019, we are even more excited looking forward. Our firm is dedicated to personal injury law, and it is our pleasure to do our part to help out Long Islanders who need help when an unexpected adversity arises.

For the next few weeks, the stores are going to be busy. The holiday season is the biggest shopping time of the year as everyone is looking to buy gifts for their family. As a result, the parking lots of Long Island are going to be busier than usual for the next month.

Parking lots always have the potential of causing a car accident. More than 50000 car accidents occur in a parking lot every year. The holiday season is especially hazardous because at peak times throughout the week, the parking lots are going to be busy and chaotic. People tend to be rushing more this time of year, and many have higher levels of stress. To ensure the best safety, here are some tips to avoid an accident in a parking lot.

Parking Spot Location

With the sun going down very early, there’s a good chance you’ll have to park your car in darkness. Sometimes parking in the closest spot isn’t the best spot. Parking in a well-lit spot with ample room is the safest place to park your car. You can much more easily navigate your surroundings because you can better see where you are going and you have more space to pull out of your spot. It is better to be in an open well-lit spot that is further away rather than be in a difficult and tight spot and risk getting your car hit.

Drive Defensively

It is very important that you pay lots of attention to your surroundings. Look out for cars backing up, and be careful at intersections. Even if there are stop signs, drivers sometimes do not take them as seriously in parking lots. Anticipate the actions of other drivers and be prepared to use your horn if another car does not seem to see you, especially if they are backing up and getting too close.

It is also important to drive slow as there could be shoppers walking all over the place. You do not want to be liable for a pedestrian accident. Pay special attention when backing out, or driving near the storefronts. Although they are helpful, don’t rely fully on your backup camera. Slow down at crosswalks, but be aware that many shoppers with cross the street without using a marked crosswalk.

Avoid Distractions

Additionally, do not use your phone while you are driving in a parking lot; you are still driving and it is still a distraction (https://thesuffolkpersonalinjurylawyer.com/distracted-driving-accident/). This is important to mention because studies show that 66% of drivers nationwide said they would make phone calls while driving in a parking lot. Other distractions include looking for something like your wallet, eating, or getting distracted by loud music.

In the Snow & Ice

Parking lots can be especially hazardous during snowy or icy weather. Often times it takes a longer time for parking lots to get plowed than the main roads. Additionally, sometimes parking lots are not snow plowed as well as main roads.

Even if you are driving an all-wheel-drive vehicle, be aware of its limitations. Many people are under the impression that if their vehicle is equipped with this function they are invincible in snowy weather. All-wheel-drive will help your vehicle travel up that snowy hill or move through a snow covered road, but it will not help you stop. That’s why it’s important to always drive slowly on snowy or icy roads. Accelerate slowly, brake slowly over a longer distance, turn slowly. Although these are always good practices when driving on slippery roads, this is especially important in a parking lot, when many other cars are also maneuvering.

As A Pedestrian

If you are walking in a parking lot, it’s important to be aware that other drivers may not be driving as defensively as you would like. Many drivers ignore normal traffic laws when driving in parking lots, such as ignoring stop signs and failing to use their blinkers. Additionally, at night it can be difficult for drivers to see you. Therefore, make yourself as visible as possible. Don’t weave in and out of cars. Use sidewalks and crosswalks where available. Pay attention to the brake lights of cars, knowing that they are trying to back out.

According to Wikipedia, “Blackout Wednesday” refers to the night before Thanksgiving. Sometimes it is also known as Black Wednesday, or Drinksgiving. It earns this name due to the large amounts of partying, and by extension alcohol consumption, the day before Thanksgiving. For a lot of young people, they are off from work or school, and likely aren’t worried about doing a lot of cooking for Thanksgiving. Additionally, many students who have gone away to college, take advantage of reuniting with hometown friends. As a result, it is considered one of the biggest party days of the year.

Typically, the more parties happening, the higher chance of encountering drunk drivers, and Blackout Wednesday is no exception. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Thanksgiving holiday produces more people killed in drunk driving crashes than the Christmas holiday. Upserve reports that beer sales increased by about 270% and liquor sales increase 114% on that day. So while restaurants and bars staff up and stock up, so are the police stations. They will be on high alert to protect the community from drunk drivers. Whether you will be going out yourself that night or find yourself on the road that evening, it’s very important to be responsible for yourself. Here are some tips to be safe during Blackout Wednesday.

Drink Responsibly

Alcohol obviously has the ability to impair judgment. The more you drink, the worse your decision-making is and could lead to a person making potentially dangerous choices. It’s good to know your limits before you’ve had too much.

Additionally, excessive drinking can cause a number of problems for a person’s short-term and long-term health. Short-term risks include nausea, loss of consciousness, poor quality of sleep, vomiting, increased aggression, and alcohol poisoning. Long-term risks could lead to liver damage, heart disease, cancer, dementia, and depression.

Have A Designated Driver

This is a very simple and very effective way to ensure that everyone gets home safely. The designated driver eliminates any kind of driving risk since they opt to remain sober for the entire night. Take turns for who is going to be the designated driver among your group, and make sure you contribute in gas money for your chauffeur for the night.

It’s very important that the person who is the designated driver has zero alcohol. Any consumption of alcohol has the ability to impair a person. For the average person, it takes 2-3 drinks to become legally intoxicated. Driving while intoxicated (DWI) occurs when a person is driving while their blood alcohol content (BAC) exceeds .08 in the state of New York. This results in a minimum license suspension of six months. Additionally, a driver facing a DWI could also serve jail time and have to pay hefty fines.

However, a driver is also at risk of getting a DWAI (driving while ability impaired) when at a BAC of .05 .This can impair someone after having as little as one standard alcoholic drink. So if you are the designated driver, don’t risk it and don’t have any drinks that night.

Identify a Dangerous Driver

If you do have to go out driving late Wednesday night, then there is a chance you will encounter a drunk driver. The best way to protect yourself is to pay attention to the best of your abilities to signs of a dangerous driver and take the necessary defensive driving measures.

Take note of the signs of a drunk driver. Teach your children who may now be driving as well so they can learn to drive defensively as well. A driver may be drunk if he/she is:

How To Respond to a Drunk Driver

If you see some of these things taking place, it is likely you are sharing the road with a drunk driver. First and foremost you want to stay safe, and then do what you can to report the driver. Follow these steps:

The best way to avoid drunk drivers is to avoid driving altogether the night before Thanksgiving, if possible. Try and get your groceries finished as early as you can, so you can avoid the risk of sharing the road with a drunk driver. Additionally, if your kids or teens are hanging out with friends, it might be a good idea to set a curfew for them or arrange for them to sleep over. This would decrease the risk of you or your teenager to share the road with an intoxicated driver. We wish everyone a safe Thanksgiving weekend here at Palermo Law.
