The Truth About Juul – The Marketing Campaign That is Ruining Teens

Juul (pronounced ‘jewel’) is an e-cigarette company that has become extremely popular, especially among teens. Unlike smoking a normal cigarette, Juul uses water vapor rather than smoke to allow Nicotine to enter into the lungs. For decades, our society has been aware of the harmful and addictive effects of smoking cigarettes, and much effort has been put to teach at a young age the dangers of smoking cigarettes. However, with this relatively new method of using cigarettes, the effects of “vaping” is not nearly as talked about. The result is seeing many young people trying this popular trend. And sadly, the effects of using Juul are harmful, and equally addictive. New York because we naturally assume that if someone else injured us in a car accident, it would be their insurance that would pay for our medical bills. But this isn’t the case. New York is a no-fault state, so regardless of who is at fault in the accident, it is your car insurance that is paying for your medical bills.

Is Juul Less Harmful Than Cigarettes?

Extensive research is still being done about the long-term effects of Juul. Since it is still new, we can’t possibly know all the harmful effects it can cause. However, according to a study by the American Journal of Physiology, the chemical flavorings and additives in Juul’s e-cigarettes can potentially cause more damage to the lungs than the damage caused by traditional cigarettes.

Although some don’t realize it, e-cigarettes do have doses of Nicotine in them. Juul pods specifically have about twice the dosage of Nicotine than other brands of e-cigarettes. Vaping just one Juul pod has about the same Nicotine count as a whole pack of cigarettes.

Already, it is thought to believe that vaping Juul causes a higher likelihood of developing bronchiolitis obliterans (more commonly referred to as “ popcorn lung. Some other risks of taking Juul are severe addiction, cardiovascular disease, heart problems, respiratory failure, mental health or behavior issues, nicotine poisoning, pregnancy complication or birth defects, seizures, suicidal thoughts or attempts or even a stroke.

If there are so many risks to taking Juul, then why is it so popular?

The Predatory Marketing Campaign

Juul’s whole initial campaign started as a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes. They claim that using vapor instead of smoke won’t cause harm to the lungs, and that smokers can use it to help quit smoking. Also, instead of smelling and tasting smoke, Juul pods come in a variety of fruity flavors, making it easy to use anywhere.

The FDA has already stepped in, telling Juul that there is no evidence to substantiate that Juul is a safer alternative to cigarettes. The FDA warned that, by making these claims, Juul is in direct violation of federal law. Juul has been asked to provide evidence to prove these claims.

Beyond that, Juul began to target young people. Claiming that unlike smoking, vaping is safe, and you can look cool doing it. Some don’t even realize that it is an e-cigarette, since it is shaped like a USB drive. Juul has been seen advertised online by Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, which exposes it to a very young audience. Additionally, many celebrities and online influencers have been seen advertising Juul products. Most notably Miley Cyrus was seen advertising Juul pods and now, many other influencers who aren’t being paid by Juul to advertise are seen using it, making it a popular trend among teens.

The result? Many young teens are now addicted to using Juul, without the forewarning of the risks that go along with it.

Why Lawsuits Are Being Filed Against Juul

Juul has been using aggressive marketing campaigns that falsely outline what their product actually does. They prematurely advertised their products as safe, and a positive alternative to smoking. Their campaigns still prove to be very successful today. They are a multi-billion dollar company that makes up over 75% of the e-cigarette market.

By making these claims, they have put many young people in a really sad situation where they are addicted to these Juul pods, and could face long term effects.
